Background of the study
Social media platforms have profoundly influenced the phonetic landscape of Nigerian speech, with TikTok lip sync videos serving as a prime example. These videos, where users mimic and creatively reinterpret audio content, result in noticeable phonetic variations such as accent shifts, altered intonation, and modified pronunciation patterns (Adebayo, 2023). TikTok’s visual and auditory format enables users to experiment with language in playful and innovative ways, reflecting both global trends and local dialectal influences (Ibrahim, 2024). As lip sync trends gain popularity, they contribute to a broader evolution of Nigerian phonetics by introducing novel articulatory styles and challenging traditional pronunciation norms. This study compares TikTok lip sync trends with established phonetic practices, investigating how digital media reshapes spoken language and contributes to linguistic diversity. The research further explores the socio-cultural factors behind these changes, including digital identity, youth culture, and the influence of popular media (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the problem
